Learning languages has never been easier
today with the vast improvement over school methods of "listening
and repeating" To learn a language you must understand its structure
and its verb system. Once you can do this then adding vocabulary to
your knowledge, becomes simple. You cannot learn a language by
memorizing it!
This week we are reviewing the

| The Assimil method has been
in existence since the early 1900's and is based on the
language learning method of its founder Alphonse Chérel who
learned English, German, Russian and Portuguese during his
travels around Europe as a young man. Basically he learned
something of the language each day and designed a type of
desk calendar with a catchy cartoon to help him remember. The method comprises of 2
phases, the Passive Phase and the Active
Phase.
The first phase, the Passive Phase relies
on listening to the accompanying audio, reading the lesson
and getting a feel for the language, and an idea of what is
being said before looking at the translation opposite. Each
"With Ease" course averages over 100 lessons
which includes a main dialogue of around 10-15 sentences, an
exercise which summarises the important points and
vocabulary and an exercise where you can have a go at
filling in the missing words. This is a very gentle approach
and you are only expected to get the basic idea or theme not
remember slavishly every word or note.
After the 50th lesson the Active Phase
begins whereby you continue the Passive learning (as above)
on lesson 50 but afterwards you return to Lesson 1, listen,
read and try to translate the complete passage yourself. You
will be surprised how easy it is and how much you have
picked up without realising! This then carries on as Lesson
51 Passive-Lesson 2 Active, lesson 52 Passive-lesson 3
Active and so on. Don't worry as all the instructions and
details are given in the courses as you do them. Once you
get to the Active Phase it will take an hour to complete
both the Passive lesson and the Active lesson. You need to do at
least something everyday, preferably one lesson everyday.
This is a highly respected and effective method for language
learning, If you are serious about learning a language, you
will need to complete one of the Assimil's! All "With Ease"
courses take you to B2 of the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Assimil do advanced courses for
C1 fluency, but for
English speakers, only Spanish and French are available.
These work in exactly the same way with the two phases but
you are introduced to idioms, slang and deeper meanings/
nuances of the language as well as more cultural details.
We have reviews of the other Assimil languages on the relevant
language pages on our site. |

This week
we are reviewing the highly popular and effective Michel Thomas
range. See our language reviews for the rest of the
range. We found some videos for you to find out a bit more.
I strongly recommend Michel
Thomas courses first, if you are completely new to the language.
